Department of Geography

Established in 2008 as the Centre for Studies in Geography, the centre was founded to promote excellence in geographical education and research. Over the years, it has grown steadily through quality teaching, field-based learning, and research activities. In recognition of its academic progress and contributions, it was upgraded as the Department of Geography in 2026. The Department is committed to providing knowledge in Physical and Human Geography, GIS, Remote Sensing, Environmental Studies, Fluvial Geomorphology and Regional Planning. It aims to develop skilled, socially responsible, and environmentally conscious students prepared to meet contemporary geographical and developmental challenges.
Presently, the Department of Geography offers two academic programmes: M.A./M.Sc. in Geography, FYIPGP as per NEP guidelines and Ph.D. in Geography. The department features an attractive and well-structured curriculum designed by experts from leading educational and research institutes in accordance with UGC guidelines. It has an impressive placement record, with graduates successfully employed in government departments, educational institutions, and research organizations. 53 students qualified NET, with one student securing All India Rank 17. The current faculty strength includes one Professor and five Assistant Professors. In addition to regular teaching and research activities, the department places special emphasis on areas such as water resources, environmental studies, hazards, and land cover and land use of the Brahmaputra Basin. From the year 2013, the department has been publishing the Asian Journal of Spatial Science (ISSN: 2347-7636), Ecobulletin, and a newsletter. The department is equipped with sophisticated instrumentation sponsored by NASA, USA, along with modern computer facilities. It has successfully completed 10 and is currently undertaking 5 major and minor research projects funded by agencies such as UGC, DST, and CSIR. Furthermore, the faculty members have made significant academic contributions through the publication of 64 national-level and 33 international-level Scopus indexed research papers. Since inception the department has produced 21 Ph.D.'s and 18 registered scholars are presently working.
