Bodo is one of the major indigenous languages of Northeast India and belongs to the Tibeto-Burman branch of the Sino-Tibetan language family. It is primarily spoken by the Bodo community of Assam and neighbouring regions. Over the years, the language has developed a rich body of literature encompassing poetry, fiction, drama, and academic writings. Recognized as one of the scheduled languages of the Constitution of India, Bodo plays an important role in preserving the cultural identity, traditions, and intellectual heritage of the Bodo people.
In view of the growing importance of Bodo language and literature in the academic and cultural landscape of Assam and the Northeast, the Department of Bodo has recently been established at Dibrugarh University. The department aims to promote higher studies and research in Bodo language, literature, and culture, while also contributing to the preservation and scholarly development of this important regional language. Through teaching, research, and academic activities, the department aspires to create a vibrant platform for students and scholars to engage with Bodo studies and contribute to the broader field of linguistic and cultural studies in the region.
