The Department of Economics, established in 1967, has been committed towards creating, assimilating and disseminating knowledge through teaching, research and extension services and developing human resources in the field of Economics. The course structure of the department incorporates a balance of theoretical analysis and quantitative reasoning. It offers programmes of M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. The Department encourages quality research programmes through collaboration with other Universities and academic institutions of India and abroad. The students have access to a well –stocked library, a wide range of electronic resources, and a fully equipped computer laboratory. In addition to individual projects of the faculty members, the Department is currently having Major project under UGC’s Special Assistance Programme (SAP) in third phase. The teachers of the department have conducted studies and consultancy projects for various bodies including Finance Commission, government departments, PSUs and other institutes of repute. The current thrust areas of research of the department are Tribal Development, Human Development, Social Sector, Agricultural Economics, and Demography. The department has been publishing ASSAM ECONOMIC JOURNAL, a peer reviewed research journal annually. The Department is planning to offer elective course in emerging areas with immediate focus on Petro Economics from the session 2017-18.
