Introduction

The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences was established at Dibrugarh University in 1983 as the first establishment for four years integrated Bachelor degree course in Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) in entire North East India with the intake of students from the seven North East States of India (Assam, Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland). The initial financial assistance came from the NEC (North Eastern Council), Shillong. The recurring expenditure is borne by the respective States on pro-rata basis. The department, since its establishment, is actively working for the development of Pharmacy Education and Research activities in North East India.

The Department introduced the Post Graduate courses in Pharmacy (M. Pharm) from 2002 to provide higher studies and R & D activities in Pharmacy sector.

All the courses conducted in this Department are approved by PCI and AICTE.  The alumni of this Department are engaged in various academic and other organizations in India and abroad.

Programmes Offered:

1.      Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm)

2.      Master of Pharmacy (M. Pharm in Pharmaceutics, Pharmaceutical Chemistry and Pharmacognosy)

3.      Ph. D in Pharmacy.

Eligibility criteria, duration, intake capacity, mode of selection:

1.      Bachelor of Pharmacy:

Eligibility criteria:   For admission to the First Year Class of the Course, one must have passed either-

 (i) The (10+2) Examination in Science stream Examination of the Assam Higher Secondary Council, or any other examination recognised by the Dibrugarh University as equivalent to this examination, securing not less than 50% marks in the aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Biology       

                                                “OR”

(ii) The Two-Year Diploma in Pharmacy Examination of the Dibrugarh University or of any other Institution which is recognised by the Pharmacy Council of India and AICTE securing not less than 50% marks in the aggregate.

 

NOTE:The minimum aggregate of marks in Physics, Chemistry and Biology in (10+2) required is 45% in case of candidates belonging to the Schedule Castes and Scheduled Tribes.

Duration of Course:

(a)    The Bachelor of Pharmacy (B. Pharm.) Degree Course comprises of First Year, Second Year, Third Year and Fourth Year Courses.

* The four years course is proposed to be converted to eight semesters course from the session 2013-14

(b)   Annual University Examination is held at the end of each academic year and known as First Year B. Pharm. Examination, Second Year B. Pharm. Examination, Third Year B. Pharm. Examination, and Fourth & Final B. Pharm. Examination.

Mode of Selection: Counseling of sort listed candidate based on merit-

i)        Percentage of H. S. Marks in the aggregate of Physics, Chemistry and Biology

ii)      Percentage of marks in two years Diploma in Pharmacy Examination

             

2.      Master of Pharmacy:

Eligibility criteria:

i)        Must have passed 4years of Bachelor Degree Course in Pharmacy securing not less than 55 % marks from Dibrugarh University or from any other University recognizedby the Dibrugarh University and AICTE.

ii)      A sponsored candidate from an AICTE and PCI recognized institutions should have a minimum of 2 years of teaching experience after obtaining B. Pharm degree from UGC recognised University or a candidate applying from industry as a sponsored candidate must have 2 years of industrial experience with Approval as an Approved Chemist from the respective Drugs Control Authority.

            Duration of Course:

The Post Graduate Degree Programme in Pharmacy (M. Pharm) is a four semesters full time Course with each semester of six months duration.

Mode of Selection: Counseling of sort listed candidate based on merit-

Candidates having valid score of GPAT or equivalent examination get preference.

 

Programme Objectives:

The primary objective of the department is to provide quality education to train future pharmacy professionals to serve the North Eastern States in particular and the country in general in different Govt. and private sectors. Additionally, the department also aims for Pharmaceutical Research and Development activities in North East India by utilizing the enormous natural Pharmaceutical potential of this region.

The Department collaborates with other Pharmaceutical Institution of higher education/Research Organizations to fulfill the need of modern Pharmaceutical Industries and Research Organizations for quality and trained pharmacy professionals.
