Profile

The Department of Assamese of Dibrugarh University (Established 1967) is one of the leading departments, of the institution with a unique identity in is nature. This is the only department in the stream of humanities and Social Science in all over north-east India who has been recognized as Centre for Advance Studies by University Grants Commission. Prior to this the department was facilitated by the UGC under its Departmental special Assistance Programme (D.S.A.) for ten years from 1992 to 2002. Another important programme ASIHSS sponsored by UGC was also successfully implemented by the Department. The Department has already published 47 valuable books through its various schemes. Under the patronization of different eminent forums of the country and also by itself alone the department has been organizing different seminars and workshops on some important issues since its inception. The faculty members of the departments have been continuing the research works and also contributed towards research sector form regional to international level. It is now continuing academic programme in PG level in different sectors, i.e. Assamese literature, Language, Culture and Comparative Indian literature. Along with this it has also introduced research activities in some new topics like Assamology and Indology. It has a reach library of 6748 books and more than 500 ancient manuscripts. Also it has a museum of Assamese Cultural Commodities which is ready unique in its university. This is a department with a proud heritage and strong set-up who is ever ready to facilitate the students and scholars.

The Department has a unique position in the University in terms of its academic performance and substantial contribution to human knowledge. Since the beginning the department has served a lot to Assamese Literature, Culture, History and to the society as a whole.
